Confessions of an “Easter Bunny” and Coach Catolino Spring Detox
Puffy eyes, lethargic, fluffy feeling, headaches, and an all over feeling of GROSS. This is the gift we are left with after succumbing to the tempting nature of SUGAR. I wont go into how bad sugar is for us and what it does to our bodies, hopefully you all know that by now. I don’t usually consume this horrid substance, but I must confess that there has been some dabbling here and there lately. I don’t know if it is from over working, under eating or not following my own advice:) The fact of the matter is that when I was left on Easter Bunny duty, I was left all alone with the colourful concoctions that used their sweet smell to lure me in. And it worked. It started with “just one”, and it ended with a tummy ache, ”drunk” feeling and the worst sleep ever. No, I am not exaggerating, and yes, to get to this point there was a lot more than just a few eggs. On top of it all, I had to fight sugar cravings all day yesterday. Once again the cravings won. These signs are telling me that it is time to put myself on a detox. I am sorry if I have let you all down. I had so many great messages from my clients yesterday and how they didn’t have even one bite of chocolate….I am so happy for them. It just makes my own decisions that much more awful. OH well, onwards and upwards.
Spring is a great time to detox anyway. So even if I would have stayed true to my lifestyle, I still would have taken this opportunity to give my digestive system a break. I wont be buying any weird concoctions or drinking maple syrup and cayenne. I will go back to basics. I plan on doing the following for 14 days. We you join me?
Rita’s Rules
I will consume an abundance of vegetables, sticking to leafy greens for the first 5 days. I will blend them for my 2nd and 4 th meals. Try the following (organic when possible)
- Spinach, Watercress, Kale, arugula, dandelion greens, Rapini (broccoli Rabe), Parsley
I will add peeled ginger root for its digestive property, a freshly squeezed lemon, 1/4 of an apple or berries to cut the peppery flavour of the greens. I also have some freshly roasted beets which I will add to my morning shake. I may add some Hemp Seeds for protein.
Aside from the 2 shakes, I will have a breakfast, lunch and dinner. They will be mostly veggies (raw as much as possible), fish protein source (I will stay away from red meat and eggs for 1 week), Fats in the form of coconut oil, fish oil and maybe some seeds after a couple of days.
- aim for 4 litres fresh spring water
- vegetables- unlimited (try for raw)
- 4-5 fats spread throughout the day
- green tea, white tea, and yes, even though most “cleanses” take you off coffee, I will still have my morning espresso, black.
- try and stick to fish sources (or chicken, turkey)
- stay busy
NO NO’s
- no sugar (or sugar substitutes- including stevia, agave, honey etc)
- no wheat
- no grains
- no dairy
- no red meat
- no alcohol
- no processed food
- little fruit (just the ones recommended in the shakes)
These of course are “my rules” that work for my body. You may need to tweak this by adding more fruit, eating some yogurt or subbing fish for eggs. After the 5 days, I will incorporate other kinds of vegetables including root veggies and such. I will also add some eggs and maybe bison. I want you to challenge yourself for 14 days of no processed food. Back to basics. Lets do this together. Its worth it. Trust me. On top of this, I will aim for a daily yoga class with some circuit weight training. I will leave my heavy lifting for post detox when I will incorporate my starchy carbs post workout and increase my protein consumption.
