Women, Power and Tosca Reno
On Friday March 8th, The Marconi Club of London, Ontario hosted their second annual International Women’s Day event. The event was a HUGE success, one of the largest in their history with over 375 women in attendance!
I had the honour of being the Master of Ceremonies and introducing amazing women such as singer Dr. Laura Palumbo, Make-up artists Valeria Nova and Lori Fabrizio of Two Chicks and Some Lipstick, and of course, the highlight of the evening, our Keynote speaker and my mentor, Tosca Reno.
There is something special that happens when women join together to celebrate each other and the their respective achievements. It was magical. Teresa Fabrizio, manager of the Marconi Club of London spearheaded this wonderful event that had the attendees laughing, in tears, in powerful silence and sharing anecdotes. I have been receiving countless emails regarding the event and how Tosca was so very inspirational. She spoke from her heart and shared her struggles and obstacles, her achievements and advice, all in a non-judgmental manner, making her approachable and genuine. Everyone said they could have listened to her speak for hours. I second that notion.
It was also a privilege to have another mentor of mine present and speak at the event. My mother, Gabriella Catolino, the capital campaign director at St. Joseph’s Hospice in London, spoke of the importance of Hospice. All profit from the event was donated to this wonderful cause.
I am honoured to have been part of such a special event for, about and by women. Most importantly, I am proud to be a WOMAN today. Thank you to our ancestors who have paved the road for us. But oppressive systems continue to keep women down. We must not slow down. The most important thing is that we continue to be positive models and support and nurture one another. In my opinion, there is nothing more powerful than supporting and encouraging a fellow woman. Wouldn’t you agree?
